EDIT: Part 2 is now online What happens when you strap a powerful valveless pulsejet engine to a kayak containing a 12-year-old? Well that was my latest assignment for television and here’s some behind-the-scenes footage. I won’t be able to upload any more until the program screens but watch and enjoy.

So I have Year 12 Aquatics in a couple of weeks, and it’s a major part of our assessment grade. However, I didn’t go to Aquatics for Year 11 P.E & I have never done any of the activities we have to do! So i’m kind of freaking out. We have to choose only one. Which would be the easiest for a total beginner? Windsurfing, Sailing or Kayaking??? (I’ve watched them all on youtube and they alll look so difficult and confusing)

Thankyou!!

kayaking is very easy to master and its far more simple than the others

Having done all three, I would say kayaking would be the simplest to get into as a beginner. Sailing would be the next easiest but requires a boat and a crew in most cases, and both it and windsurfing require a windy day, something that doesn’t always happen. Meanwhile, with kayaking you can go out in the boat on your own and can do it in a wide range of water conditions and locations including rivers and small lakes where you could never sail or windsurf.

You can’t learn any of these sports by looking at YouTube videos. If you have good instructors and good equipment you can learn the basics of kayaking over a few weeks and it does not require a high level of fitness or balance. Windsurfing requires both balance and strength and you need to be able to swim quite well. Sailing requires a lot more book learning and becoming familiar with the technology of the sailboat.

In the end, it is up to which sport appeals to you the most on a personal level.

Each sport is simple to master if you avail yourself of a certified instructor. I suggest that the relative difficult of each is the same. Do know that environmental conditions can determine a learner’s success. Kayaking whitewater or puddling about in a small pond? Windsurfing in strong winds or a slight breeze? Sailing in a solo boat or with a large crew? Before you chose one to learn, read about each.
