Hello! I was only ever taken to the dentist once when I was little to have some teeth removed. But my parents couldn’t afford dental care, and I’ve just turned 22 and can barely afford it myself…but I know it needs to be done.

I’ve noticed I have some cavities, mostly on my back wisdom teeth. I don’t have any tooth pain, the wisdom teeth had plenty of room when they grew in…I don’t think I need a root canal, but I don’t know how I can even tell!

But at any rate, I could use some help. I want to call the local dentist (I have no insurance, though) and talk to them. I’m not sure what questions to ask…other than to say: “I’ve never been to a dentist, help!”

Is there anything specific I should ask to be done? Any information I should be sure to have? It -seems- that on average the exams cost about 150 dollars, give or take. But what exactly do they do?

If I’ve never been, should I ask for molds or X-rays? Or should I just let them poke around and hope for the best? I’m really nervous….but I don’t want to have bad breath from the cavities and would rather get them fixed sooner than later.

Crowns, fillings, root canals? It’s all so confusing!

Ask friends for the name of a good dentist. Call the office and explain that you have not had dental care before, but need an initial exam and would like to come in for an appointment. They will look at your teeth and gums and check for cavities, infections, gum problems and a number of other things that can go wrong in the mouth. Tell them you would like to have a course of treatment explained and put on paper with estimates of the cost. You and the dentist can then plan for any work you may have to have done. They will suggest that you come in for an initial cleaning and then suggest that you have your teeth cleaned and checked every six months. The restorative work (if needed) would be done at appointments in between the cleanings. At the first appointment, the doctor will likely want some x-rays taken of any areas he or she thinks may have decay. The x-rays usually cost a bit, but are not horribly expensive. Just ask questions and work with them. Good luck. Very wise move by you to start getting dental care!

You waited wisely. Today’s dentists are gentle, respectful and use extremely wonderful gas…AAAAaaaahhhh. WONDERFUL GAS.

just dont be scared/afraid, they know what they’re doing. dont ask unless there’s a problem – eg you’re feeling pain etc – because they’ll know what to lok for etc.
