Diabetes is caused when the pancreas does not make enough insulin. With type 1 diabetes, the pancreas makes little to no insulin, so these people need injections of insulin every day. Type one is usually diagnosed from birth to around the age of 30. Type 2 diabetes is caused when the pancreas does not make enough insulin OR makes lots of insulin, but the body does not use it properly. This is insulin resistant type 2. Type 2 is treated with oral medications, insulin or both. Some type 2 patients can control their diabetes with diet and exercise for many years, but usually later in life require medication. Eating too much sugar or sweets does not cause diabetes. If you have diabetes in your family, you have a risk factor. Diabetes can not be prevented….there is no way of stopping it. Even with a perfect diet and exercise, you can still develop it. It is a huge misconception that it can be stopped. Eating a healthy diet and exercising it can perhaps postpone the development of it, but does not stop it. Now, I’m not saying that everyone is going to get diabetes…..What I’m saying that if you have a risk factor you may or may not develop the disease. But it is not a disease you can prevent…like polio or measles. Many people that have been diagnosed with type 2 (51%) are not or have been overweight. This is another huge misconception. Both types are caused because of problems with the pancreas. Diabetes (both types) can be genetic. Especially type 2. Both types have to watch their diets and keep the carbs in their diet on the low side.

For the cause, Diabetes mellitus occurs when the pancreas doesn’t make enough or any of the hormone insulin, or when the insulin produced doesn’t work effectively. In diabetes, this causes the level of glucose in the blood to be too high.

For prevention, The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) found that over the 3 years of the study, diet and exercise sharply reduced the chances that a person with IGT (impaired glucose tolerance) would develop diabetes.

The biggest cause of diabetes is obesity.
