I moved out of an apartment before my lease was up in March 2000. Just two weeks ago, a collection agency started writing and calling me on this account (in February I bought a new car). When they said why they were calling, I stated I wasn’t going to disuss the situation with them and hung up. It’s been 7 years. Why are they calling now, do they have any ground to stand on, and does my answering the phone restart the 7 years?
I wasn’t sure if me answering the phone and actually speaking with them would count as activity. It is NOT on my credit report.
And does the 7 years start from the time I moved out or the time the collection agency bought the account?

no, I managed a collection agency for 2 years! the only way to restart the 7 years is to make a payment! The only way they can still talk to you legally after 7 years is if they have been granted a judegement from a court then its 10 years from the date of the judgement otherwise they can not leagally contact you at all!

No, I don’t believe it will restart the seven years. You can always pull your credit report and see if it is still there…. and ask the credit report company when it will come off your report.

no, that is your credit report and just because you hang up your phone has nothing to do with it. if they couldnt reach you, they cant restart the 7 years, if your phone is disconnected they cant “restart” the 7 years. its law, and not up to them.
