Extra work is the only on set experience I’ve had. I have a whole bunch of school plays and training but I heard it’s not professional to put school plays should I just leave my training experience on there?

Well by now you’ve heard both sides of the argument. The general rule (especially in LA and NY) is that you do NOT put extra work down on your resume. Likes it has been said before, extra work is NOT ‘acting’. However, I by no means, mean to discredit extra work. I’ve done my fair share, as have a lot of actors, but is not acting. What it is, is an excellent way for someone with little or no experience a chance to gain some experience of what it is like to actually be on set, what’s expected, seeing how long most days go (12-14 hours +) – things like that. So I highly recommend extra work to get your feet wet.

I will slightly contradict myself in that I do feel it’s OK to put extra work on a resume if you in a very small market area as it at least shows you’ve been ‘on set’ which is more that a lot of ‘small market’ thespians have .

Eh, yakidi yak to the people saying it isn’t professional or that it is less desirible than school plays.

When was the last time you had to be part of an Entertainment Union for being on a school play? Did you find working on set, with you A.D, being mindful of the camera, being responsible for yourself and your agency, where time is money difficult on your school play?

I am not decrediting your school plays, though I am saying it is ABSOLUTE NONSENSE to value it over actually “working”. Extra work DOES give you hands on experience in a lot of areas of the professional Entertainment Industry – so yeah put it down and be proud!

    All the best :)

Put your school experience AND extra work. I have done extra work, and had small parts. Also been in Musical Theatre all my life. Everything that you have had experience in, including extra work, is looked at and recognized as acting work you have done. Extra work, is acting you know.
You get to know how to act in front of camera.
Expressions of your face. etc. etc.

It’s more professional to put school plays than extra work. Acting is acting, wherever you do it, and extra work is not acting. Plus if you’re pretty young, it’s not a big deal to have school plays on your resume, assuming they’re not things like “Santa Saves Christmas” or something hokey like that.

EDIT: I’m not saying extra work has no intrinsic value, I’m saying it’s not acting and it doesn’t belong on an acting resume, and anyone with any experience in the industry will recognize it at once for what it is on your resume and ignore it.
