Politics: Anyone Notice The Similarities In JW Teachings & Those Of Jonestown/ Waco? (6/21/2012)

Been watching the “Witness to” documentaries on MSNBC and I was in shock the entire time. I couldnt believe all the similarities between those cults and the JWs. Could barely even watch the one on Waco because there were so many thoughts/ideas that David Korresh was preaching that sounded eerily similar to the teachings of the JWs. Those poor cult members really thought they were being led by gods direction thru a select human, but it turned out to be disasterous. Hopefully the Witnesses will figure their beliefs out before anything as horrible as these disasters happens.

Anyone else watch those shows? and did you too think of the JWs as being arm in arm with them?

When anyone tells you that God told Him/Her that you are special and chosen by God and everyone else will be killed and/or punished by God, run away.

    Watchtower, 9/1/89 page 19:

“ONLY Jehovah’s Witnesses, those of the anointed remnant and the “great crowd,” as a united organization under the protection of the Supreme Organizer, have any Scriptural hope of surviving the impending end of this doomed system dominated by Satan the Devil.”

Unfortunately I have not seen those documentaries. However, having once been a baptized Jehovah’s Witness myself, I’m not the least bit surprised that you’ve noticed similarities between the Witnesses and various cults. Although I highly doubt that the Witnesses will ever do anything as drastic as David Koresh and Jim Jones’ cults, I’ve personally experienced the psychological effects of their cult like teaching practices. After I quit going to the meetings, I went through several years of spiritual limbo because I’d had it drilled into my head that the Jehovah’s Witnesses were the only true path to God and every other religion was a member of Babylon the Great. Also during this time, I still pretty much lived my life like I was a practicing Jehovah’s Witness (i.e. not celebrating holidays or birthdays, not voting, etc.). I did this because I knew if I “partook of the world,” I would be disfellowshipped, and I certainly didn’t want to burn any of my bridges. I guess in the back of my mind, I figured I’d eventually start going to the meetings again. After all, they had the “truth” right? And like the Apostle Peter at John 6:68, I literally didn’t know where else I could go.

In actuality, I spent only about three years as a practicing Jehovah’s Witness and eleven years in limbo because I didn’t want to be cut off from what I’d been led to believe was the true path to God. Although pugjw9896 is entirely correct regarding the fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses are still IN the world without actually being PART of the world, my life is a prime example of how a person can be just as cut off from the world as David Koresh’s followers. While I was still in the world, I was nearly as isolated from my friends and family as if I had been tucked away in a religious compound. The invisible chains that bound me to the Witnesses were every bit as real as the walls surrounding the Branch Davidian complex.

I’m thankful that I was finally able to break those chains and once again become an actual member of both my family and society.

You do ask a good question…but where is the individual who is asking 7 million people to do strange things?
Koresh and Jones were making up their own rules…where as the group of brothers who are responsible for the Watchtower and Awake! magazines NEVER identify themselves, because this would be putting them in a position [ such as the beforementioned two]
EVERY statement in the magazines is backed by scripture…
Jones went against what the scriptures state by taking his group…out of the world…isolating themselves in Guiana.

(John 17:15) “I request you, not to take them out of the world, but to watch over them because of the wicked one.

J.W’s are IN the world, but not PART of it. Never getting involved in politics or power struggles.

As for Koresh, he just wanted his own underage harem…but it does show how some people can be mis-led…something we should all be careful of…

I hope i have proved to you and other readers that your claim is baseless…

So you`re saying if I was familiarwith Catholic beliefs and formed my own “following” by teaching primarily Catholic beliefs ………… it would constitute proof that the Catholic church was working “arm in arm” with me ???? huh ? huh ? huh ? …………. is THAT what you`re saying , Mortimer ????
